Logistics
Accommodations & Transportation
The conference hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn, Pittsburgh University Place. A room block is available for speakers and attendees until April 1, 2025. All conference venues are easily accessible by foot, taxi, or bus. They include the Frick Fine Arts Cloister (Thursday), Pitt Law School (Friday), the Center on Race and Social Problems (Saturday). These are located in the Frick Fine Arts Building, Barco Law Building, and Cathedral of Learning respectively. Other venues will be announced by email so please keep an eye out!
Transit is easily available from the Pittsburgh International Airport to the Cathedral of Learning. While taxis and ride shares are also available and sometimes slightly faster, they tend to be expensive. Expect prices in the $40-60 range each way. At high traffic times, Uber/Lyft/taxi surge pricing may exceed $80 without tip. Public transit is often a faster, as well as cheaper, means of getting to campus.
Food and Drink
The organizers of the first Race + IP conference articulated a desire to ensure that the gathering would center community, care, and intimacy. As such, we will host two breakfasts, two lunches, and two receptions for all attendees, with an eye to meeting as many dietary needs as possible and supporting local restaurant, bakery, and cafe owners, including Redstart Roasters and La Gourmandine. Food and drink are easily available in and around the Barco Law Building and Cathedral of Learning in lively Oakland. We encourage participants to explore local establishments as they are able. Pittsburgh Magazine and Eater have made two very different lists of their in town favorites. We have no doubt that you will find many interesting recommendations in them. And here’s an amazing list of Black owned businesses in the area, with options for Ethopian, Trinidadian, Tanzanian cuisine and more should you wish to support local proprietors of color.
Pittsburgh boasts two mid-range dining choices that were featured on The Restaurant List in the New York Times. If you wish to visit Apteka, the fabulous Eastern European vegan restaurant featured in the New York Times in 2024, please note that they do not take reservations. However, Fet Fisk, featured in the New York Times in 2025, does take them. More specific recommendations for restaurants and bars are available upon request. The hotel lobby and bar are also available as gathering spaces for the duration of the conference. Please keep an eye on the News for updates and features on conference happenings.
We encourage you to make the most of the city and social time to connect with one another. If you arriving early/staying late and would like help finding company to explore the city or additional recommendations for where to visit, the organizers are happy to offer suggestions.
Map of the Campus
Below is a map of the campus with the Cathedral of Learning in the approximate center. A navigable map of the campus is available here. Please note that a number of Carnegie Museums are within walking distance of the Cathedral as are Phipps Conservatory and Carnegie Mellon University. Dippy the Dinosaur, the whimsical must see patron dinosaur of Pittsburgh, has his own Twitter feed at @dippy_the_dino if you wish to follow. If you are feeling adventurous and wish to venture outside of the campus, we recommend the Mattress Factory, which features engaging exhibits by local artists, or the nearby Carnegie Museums.
